Everything Is Terrible! The Movie

2Everything 2Terrible II: Tokyo Drift

When I first encountered Everything Is Terrible! I thought it was super cool. Here was this group scouring through VHS tapes trying to find the best stuff in them, and just posting megacuts online. Naturally, over the year, I got copies of all the movies they put out, and followed them with great interest. I even went to see their live show on their Legends tour, and brought a couple Jerrys with me.

However, in recent years, I’ve grown a little tired of EIT’s whole schtick and I found the last two cut-up movies to be a bit more lackluster than I was expecting. I appreciate the culture jamming aspects around the EIT movies, but this particular brand of it has gotten a little tiring and feels a little meaningless. Also, I think the focus on the Jerry Maguire VHS tape pyramid stuff is a joke that’s been taken a little too far and I can’t mu ster the enthusiasm I once had for this collective. I want them to still thrive, in a way, but I’m not sure I’ll go out of my way to see whatever they come up with next.

So, of course, I found myself putting on the first two EIT movies while cleaning up my apartment. There are still some funny bits, but I don’t think the weirder parts of the VHS tapes get to be showcased as well as they could’ve been. On top of that, I think the meta-narrative around the second movie just isn’t as fun as it was the first time I watched it.

Part of me is considering getting rid of all my Everything Is Terrible! DVDs, but I would want to make sure they go to someone who would take care of them correctly. I don’t know. I just don’t feel the magic anymore. Maybe I’m just getting old.

Wait a minute… I’m beginning to think all these different artists might be some of the same guys!

(Artificial Intelligence II): More Electronic Listening Music from Warp by Various Artists

Not as good as the first Artificial Intelligence, but still solid.

Lifeforms by The Future Sound of London

Spanners by The Black Dog

Wrecque Byte Corners EP by Oberman Knocks

GQ on the EQ by Kid606

Pretty good for an artist I only know about due to his title and album art parody of Big Black’s Songs About Fucking.

μ20: 20 Years of Planet Mu by Various Artists

Really all over the place. If you’re looking for a lot of variety, this is pretty good compilation of electronic music. It just doesn’t feel like there’s a cohesive vision behind it.

Go Hawaii by Casino Versus Japan

I like this, and I don’t remember why! I need to make more notes as I actually listen to music, as I have hard time recalling specifics so many days later and always feel like I’m an idiot (and I’m always writing like an idiot).

Oooh, that noise! I love it.

A Strangely Isolated Place by Ulrich Schnauss

Kinda stinko. If I was Robert Christgau I’d give it scissors as “Monday – Paracetamol” being is the only good track. Everything else is just okay, but gets bogged down in toy pianos and positive vibes.
